About Kahal B'Raira

Kahal B'raira, a congregation of Secular Humanistic Jews, has been meeting in the Boston area since 1975.  We meet for holiday services, discussion, culture, Sunday School, teen/youth group, holidays and other events.  Sunday School and Adult meetings happen 14 times per school year.   We also hold periodic Sabbath and Havdalah services.  See our calendar for specific dates and times.

Humanistic Judaism embraces a philosophy that combines rational thinking with a celebration of Judaic culture and identity. Humanistic Jews value their Jewish identity and the aspects of Jewish culture that offer a genuine expression of their contemporary way of life. Kahal B'raira welcomes members to our congregation who come from Interfaith families.  Our community is enriched by the contributions of our diverse membership. We celebrate Jewish holidays and life cycle events (such as weddings and bar and bat mitzvah) with inspirational ceremonies that draw upon but seek to go beyond traditional literature.

For Adult meetings (which take place during Sunday School hours), the adult membership of Kahal B'raira meets for a schmooze, a brief business meeting, a Sunday service, and a feature program.  Please click here to learn more about our adult programs.

Kahal B'raira is a cooperative.  All adult members participate in at least one committee and at least one Holiday service.  Find out  more about committees.

We are affiliated with the Society for Humanistic Judaism

Visitors are welcome. Children may visit our Sunday School, but please contact our Principal before you attend.

The congregation has adopted a position statement supporting GLBT rights and same-sex marriage, and a position statement expressing concern over the situation in Darfur.

Kahal B-raira is the fourth oldest Humanistic Jewish congregation in the United States.  A brief history of the congregation was prepared in 1999 honoring its cofounders, Sy and Barbara Schnuer.
