Public Statement Regarding Genocide in
Darfur
adopted April 10, 2005
Kahal B'raira, a congregation of Secular and Humanistic Jews in the
Boston area committed to peace and justice, is outraged and horrified
by the racist and genocidal actions of the Sudanese government against
its people in Darfur. During past genocides, whether against Armenians,
Jews,Cambodians, Rwandans, or Bosnians it was possible to claim we
didn't fully know what was going on. This time, in Darfur, President
Bush, Congress, and the European Parliament have already declared
genocide to be underway.
Kahal B'raira urges the government of the United States to take all
possible diplomatic actions to stop the slaughter of innocents by:
- demanding that the Sudanese government halt the
forced relocation of civilians and provide for their safe and voluntary
return;
- imposing an arms embargo on the Government of Sudan
and implementing economic and travel sanctions; and
- providing logistical, military and financial support
to an African Union force in Darfur.
We urge all people of conscience to make similar requests of their
governments.
This statement shall be distributed to:
a) area newspapers to be published as letters to the editor;
b) government leaders;
c) other organizations, at a minimum to SHJ, GBIO.
