Teaching about Religion in the Age of Intolerance

May 22, 2016 - 9:15am - 12:00pm

Our speaker this morning is Linda K. Wertheimer, author of Faith Ed:  Teaching about Religion in an Age of Intolerance.  Courts long ago banned public school teachers from preaching of any kind, but the question remains: How much should schools teach about the world’s religions – any and all religions?  Faith Ed., a book by journalist Linda K. Wertheimer illustrates how answering this question in recent decades has pitted schools against their communities and sometimes resulted in national controversy.  Click Here for more about Ms. Wetheimer and Faith Ed.

Wertheimer’s reporting on what is happening in our classrooms took her from Wellesley MA to a small town in Texas, Tampa FL, Wichita KS, Modesto CA, and back to Ohio where she grew up. At a time when Republican presidential candidates are openly expressing anti-Muslim views, it's more critical than ever to increase and improve education about different religions. Wertheimer talks not only about what's happening in schools, but about the experiences of religious minorities as well.

Our morning includes a Humanistic service and school for Pre-K through 9th graders.  The morning also includes our annual KB business meeting.
