KB Sunday School Information

The Sunday School at Kahal B'raira acquaints children with the history, traditions, beliefs and accomplishments of their ancestors, so they may understand and enjoy their heritage. The school teaches the humanistic, rather than the theistic, elements of that rich heritage. We want our children to develop their convictions on the basis of thought and experience; we respect our children's desire to ask questions, to create, and to share their own ideas about Jewish beliefs and traditions. Most importantly, we want our children's religion to be meaningful and dynamic: something that will grow with them as they mature. Therefore the school includes a broad range of Jewish experience to promote a wholesome understanding of their identities as Jews and as Humanists.

Please contact our Sunday School Principal, Steven Brion-Maisels, with any questions about the program.  His email address is steven@peacegames.org.

Vistors

Your children are welcome to visit the Sunday school, but please contact the principal beforehand so that she can make the necessary arrangements.

Curriculum

Our Sunday School is organized by a committee of parents whose activities include enrollment, hiring of the principal and teachers, and curriculum development. The School consists of small classes, spanning nursery through seventh grade. Curriculum includes holidays, Bible stories, history, Jewish culture and traditions, literature, current events and ethics. To see the K-5 curriculum summary, click here. The classes meet 14 times, approximately every three to four weeks between September and June on Sunday mornings at the Fayerweather School, 765 Concord Ave, Cambridge.

Bar and Bat Mitzvahs

Bar and Bat Mitzvah preparation is an optional program.  Families are encouraged to include the congregation. The child selects and studies a Judaic topic for one year with an adult tutor, and then makes a presentation to the congregation as part of the Bar or Bat Mitzvah service. Each Mitzvah family creates and organizes its own service with support from the congregation.  The program is described in more detail here.

Enrollment in the Sunday School

The Kahal B’raira Sunday School runs for 14 sessions, September through June.  Annual tuition for each child enrolled is as follows:

  • Preschool  $300 (child should be > 3 years of age AND toilet trained)
  • Kindergarten-Grade 8 $475
There is also a youth group for children beyond grade 8.  Tuition is $325.  Technically speaking, the youth group is not part of the Sunday school, because it meets on its own schedule.

You can enroll your children in the Sunday school when you join KB.  Use the enrollment form.
Grade Placement

The Sunday School Committee reserves the right to determine the placement and age ranges for each class according to enrollment.  Sunday School level does not need to be the same as the child’s regular school level.  If there is any information that will allow the Sunday School to place your child appropriately and/or that will assist the teacher, please let us know by attaching an explanation to the enrollment form.
