Touro Synagogue and Colonial Jewish History Tour

Sunday, June 22, 2025 26 Sivan 5785

10:45 AMNewport, RI

RSVP to Sam by June 15th.

Join other KBers in an excursion to Newport, RI on June 22nd. We will meet at the Loeb Visitor Center (52 Spring Street) at 10:45 am.

Unfortunately, it was just announced that the synagogue itself is closed to tours due to an ongoing dispute between the NY-based landlord and the Touro Synagogue Foundation. You can still take a virtual tour here .
We will not be deterred!

At 11:00 am we will go on a  Colonial Jewish Walking Tour  ($18 per person paid at the entrance) to trace the same steps walked by the colonial-era Jewish community in Newport and see where congregants lived, worked, and worshiped in the 1700s. The walking tour takes about an hour and is weather dependent. Please note that some of the sidewalks are narrow and uneven.

From 12:00-1:00 pm, we will attend a free history presentation, explore the grounds, and view the interactive exhibits in the Visitor Center. We will learn why the synagogue is considered one of the most architecturally distinguished buildings of 18th century America and why it stands as a symbol of religious freedom for all Americans.

At 1:00 pm, we will walk over to Brick Alley Pub & Restaurant at 140 Thames St. for a self-pay lunch (6 minutes from Touro and 5 minutes from the Parking Lot).
